Exploring Non-Bench Roles for Scientists in Biotech: A Look Inside My Journey at Promega

When I was pursuing my graduate studies, I imagined that a career in the biotech industry would look just like my time in the lab – focused on research, benchwork, and experiments. However, my journey at Promega has completely redefined what a scientific role in industry can be.

One of the biggest surprises has been discovering how diverse and multifaceted the roles for scientists in biotech truly are. Beyond the traditional research positions, Promega offers a wide range of roles where scientists can thrive and make a meaningful impact – from Senior Scientists and R&D Group Leaders to Client Support Consultants and Product Managers.

As a Scientific Instructional Designer in the Scientific Applications and Training group, I’ve had the opportunity to bridge the gap between technical science and instructional design. I collaborate with experts from R&D and Marketing to create training programs that not only educate our internal teams but also empower them to effectively support and advise customers. Whether it’s online training courses, webcasts, or in-person lab activities, I’m constantly learning and adapting, and it’s incredibly fulfilling to see the results in the form of increased confidence and competence among our Sales and Technical Services teams.

One of the most rewarding parts of my job is working on in-person training, where attendees gain hands-on experience with our products, replicate experiments that reflect real-world customer needs, and engage in data analysis. Collaborating with R&D scientists during these sessions allows me to directly contribute to how our products are understood and used by those in the field. It’s an incredible feeling to see our trainees confidently present their findings and take what they’ve learned into their customer-facing roles.

The diversity of roles at Promega, and in the biotech industry more broadly, has completely changed how I view a scientist’s career path. For those of us trained in life sciences, there’s a whole world of opportunities waiting beyond the bench. If you’re considering a career outside of academia, the biotech industry offers a vast range of roles that make use of scientific expertise in ways you may have never imagined.

As a scientist in industry, you don’t have to choose between research and application – you can have both. There’s a place for everyone, whether you’re passionate about problem-solving, customer support, or even instructional design.
