Integrated research supply coordination

Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory

Commercial & Industrial Case Study

Agency

Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL) is one of the U.S. Department of Energy’s flagship research institutions. Renowned for its pioneering work in renewable energy, climate science, and grid innovation, LBNL plays a leading role in transforming energy systems at both national and global scales. The lab frequently pilots next-generation clean energy technologies to assess feasibility, scalability, and impact.

Need

In January 2023, the Energy Technologies Area (ETA) at LBNL initiated a demonstration project to evaluate the integration of solar and battery technologies in a campus-based microgrid. To proceed, the lab required high-efficiency inverter and battery systems that met the rigorous standards of DOE-funded field trials:

  • UL 9540A and IEEE 1547 compliance
  • Seamless grid-tied energy conversion
  • Compatibility with research-grade monitoring systems
  • Strict scheduling to coincide with Installation phasing”

Due to the technical sensitivity of the equipment and the fast-track nature of the deployment, LBNL required a supplier who could act quickly, maintain clear documentation, and ensure precise delivery without delays or substitutions.

Response

Wilson Dependable Services (WDS) partnered with LBNL’s clean energy procurement team to source and deliver the following key components for their solar battery integration initiative. WDS provided line-item documentation and conformance artifacts, then sourced and delivered:

  • SolarEdge Energy Hub HD-Wave SE7600H-USMNUBL15 7.6 kW, single-phase (1-Ph) Inverter
  • SolarEdge BAT-10K1PS0B-02 Energy Bank Battery (10 kWh)

WDS ensured that all system components were:

  • Properly documented for DOE regulatory compliance
  • Delivered with full manufacturer support and warranty backing
  • Scheduled and shipped to align precisely with the lab’s internal project milestones

We also supported LBNL’s procurement office with product specification sheets, compatibility confirmations, and documentation for federal acquisition protocols. Cross-checked inverter–battery compatibility (voltage, communications, and commissioning procedures).

Outcome

The system was installed and commissioned on schedule in January 2023, enabling the research team to begin energy modeling and load response testing as planned. The inverter and battery system became part of a larger proof-of-concept model for decentralized campus energy management.

Thanks to timely procurement and reliable equipment performance, the project met key testing benchmarks within the first 90 days — setting the stage for broader microgrid analysis in 2025. The partnership between WDS and LBNL not only helped drive energy innovation but also demonstrated the value of agile small business procurement in supporting mission-critical research.
